The largest of the three makhteshim in the Negev, 40 km. long, 9 km wide and close to 400 m’ deep, it is a truly remarkable geological formation. Although the floor of the makhtesh is largely sandstone, it bears signs of a variety of events including volcanic activity, magmatic intrusions and rock metamorphosis. Human activity has also played a part! Things to see:
01. Camel Hill lookout
For a first look at the makhtesh
02. The carpentry
Metamorphosed sandstone set into what might be petrified wood in a carpentry shop.
03. Coloured sands
Recreation area with a small bathing pool. An eagle observatory nearby.
04. "Ramon Beach”
A small lake fed with ground water, a place to relax and swim a bit.
05. Wall of Dykes
Incredible magmatic intrusions through the sandstone.
06. Khan Saharonim
a Nabatean way station on the Spice Route from Petra to Gaza. Water came from a nearby spring
And much, much more. We’ll need at least one whole day needed to view it adequately, the details will depend on the season and your preferences.
