Water in the desert

A desert is any region with an average annual rainfall of less than 250mm (10 inches) of rain a year. The terrain is mostly arid so every drop of water is a celebration! Today we will view the wonder of water in the desert.

Lake Yeruham

Initially a small dam to collect water for settlements downstream. Now a water park and a wooded picnic area, in stark contrast to the arid hills around it

Ein Avdat

A gorge cut through the limestone by Nahal Zin. Water and shade harbour glorious vegetation and wild life. In the Byzantine period, hermits sheltered in the surrounding caves.

Ein Akev

A large rock pool at the base of a waterfall and fed by a contact spring. About 7 m deep and full all year. The classic place to take a dip in the desert!

Havarim Water Hole

A large cistern carved out by the Nabateans, able to store up to 500 cubic meters of water redirected from the surrounding hilltops.

Borot Ramalia

Hermits’ caves carved into the chalk cliff and Nabatean water holes. Some of the caves and cisterns are still in use by local shepherds.
